What is self-storage anyway?

Often times people ask us the question, “what is self-storage anyway?” Considering it is such a new concept in East Africa, it’s a very good question.

“Self-Storage” is where storage space or storage units, are rented on a short-term basis. Self-storage is both for residential as well as business clients.

At storage Central for example, we rent storage units as small as 3m2 (a nice sized closet), up to 20m2 (a 2 car garage). The minimum time a customer can rent a unit is for 4 weeks. There is no maximum time.

The idea behind self-storage is that anyone who needs to store their belongings can do so, whether they are a business or individual. Each person who rents a storage unit can access that unit Monday through Saturday during business hours. Every person has their own lock and key for their specific unit(s). The units are private, clean and secure.

While every self-storage facility is different, each one should provide good 24 hour security, be well located, and offer clean and secure units. Most importantly when you visit a self-storage facility you should feel comfortable there.

So if anyone ever asks you what “self-storage is,” hopefully you will be able to give them a good answer.
